University of Galway

Working with the University of Galway, we focused on strengthening the ecological value of what is already one of Ireland’s most biodiverse campuses. Our approach centred on low-impact, biodiversity-led management of the riverside walkways and green spaces that run through the Lough Corrib Special Area of Conservation. These heavily used pedestrian routes are now maintained entirely mechanically with no herbicides, with vegetation cut back only during the dormant season to keep paths safe while preserving nectar sources and natural cover along the margins.

Across the wider campus, we introduced a series of targeted biodiversity supports and long-term planting improvements. Nest boxes, bat boxes and insect hotels were installed in key locations, and every new or upgraded landscape area was assessed for wildflower sowing or pollinator-friendly planting in line with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. Traditional evergreen shrub beds are being gradually replaced with perennial and herbaceous species that provide far greater wildlife value, and rotational management of Blackthorn was introduced following the discovery of the Brown Hairstreak butterfly to ensure ongoing availability of its larval foodplant.

We also manage woodland areas, meadows and the University’s sports pitches with an emphasis on sustainability and ecological balance. Felled timber is left in place to support fungi and saprophytic organisms, meadow areas are allowed to grow naturally with mown paths guiding visitors through them, and all waste materials from sports-field maintenance are recycled off-site. Regular reviews and biodiversity-focused KPIs ensure that the campus continues to evolve as a resilient, accessible and ecologically rich environment for students, staff and the wider Galway community.
