This renovated semi detached home in Galway needed a garden that lived up to its fresh, modern interior. The original rear space fell sharply away from the house, creating awkward level changes and very little room for relaxing or gathering. The clients wanted a garden that made outdoor living easy, brought plenty of colour through the seasons, and stayed low maintenance. They also wanted space for a modest kitchen garden and a Cordyline planted as a tribute to their mother.
The design reshaped the entire rear space to make it usable and inviting. An upper patio next to the house now acts as the main outdoor living zone, with broad steps leading down to a new lawn.
Stepping stones guide you toward a sunken lower patio framed by clean retaining walls. This lower terrace feels sheltered and intimate, surrounded by a mix of ornamental planting chosen for structure, movement, and year round interest
Beyond the main planting beds, an Elaeagnus hedge was added to create long term screening for the practical areas of the garden, keeping the utility spaces out of sight without sacrificing access. Two raised vegetable borders give the clients an easy, tidy way to grow their own produce, while a bespoke shed anchors the domestic corner of the site. The result is a coherent, contemporary garden that balances beauty with function and gives the homeowners a space they can enjoy every month of the year.
