Following detailed walking surveys of the BSIL campus and a desktop review of the wider Ballybrit area, we developed a focused biodiversity enhancement strategy for the site. Using Radharc’s multidisciplinary expertise—and guided by our commitment to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan—we assessed existing conditions and identified where realistic ecological gains could be made.

Our surveys showed that the most biodiverse areas are those furthest from buildings, car parks and access roads, where hedgerows, semi-natural grassland and naturally regenerating backlands already support strong foraging and nesting activity. To extend this value into more active parts of the campus, we recommended additional hedge and shrub screening to create safe, sheltered corridors for wildlife.

Proposed actions were grouped by cost and complexity, ranging from simple changes to mowing and vegetation management, to moderate and higher-level interventions such as new native planting zones and structured pollinator routes. The shift away from glyphosate is beneficial for biodiversity but requires compensatory measures like bark mulching or increased manual weeding—considerations built into our guidance.

Together, these recommendations provide a practical, phased approach to strengthening habitat quality across the BSIL site, helping the campus support richer biodiversity while remaining fully compatible with day-to-day operations.
